NAA awards announced

Written by Adrian Holovaty on July 16, 2002

The Newspaper Association of America has presented this year's Digital Edge Awards. The big winners this year were CJOnline, SavannahNOW.com and washingtonpost.com. My favorite is Hannibal.net's Mark Twain site, complete with videos of Mark Twain impersonators.

There's some great journalism here. I just wish there were an award for accessibility -- a reward for site creators who take the time to make their content easily accessible to all users, regardless of browser type. We're a long way from such an award, but introducing something along these lines might incent sites to do better.

Incent? Did you really use the word incent?

Okay, the beauty of the English language is it's maleability. I'll let it pass.

On the topic of access, what about the whole issue of "deep linking"? It seems to me there's something very wrong with a site that doesn't want people to go directly to an article, but forces them to figure out how to reach it via navigation clues (I use the term loosely) on the home page.

It's malleability, I believe. Not allowing deep linking is (once again) fighting against the medium instead of working with it -- hopefully most sites have given up on that particular battle.

Whoa there! The deep linking battle is a whole other can o' worms. And it's not a pretty one. Check out Poynter's online-news list-serv for endless, often repetitive, commentary on that matter. (Doesn't that sound fun?)

(By the way, I did look up "incent" before using it.) :)
